We look into what’s driving this shift and how advisors can respond to better serve their clients.

Premium Lifestyle Protection

First, the cost of maintaining an affluent lifestyle has risen. The Julius Baer Lifestyle Index increased by 10.2%, driven by higher residential property values and vehicle prices. Currency movements also contributed, with several strengthening against the USD. At the same time, higher input costs, from skilled labour and raw materials to tariffs, have flowed through to luxury pricing.

As the cost of preserving a desired lifestyle rises, wealth increasingly feels like something to protect. Spending has become more deliberate, and that same selectivity is reflected in portfolios, where investors place greater emphasis on resilience and targeted allocations.

Mobility

Second, ultra-high-net-worth individuals are embracing multi-jurisdiction living. Where wealth and lifestyle were once anchored to a single location, mobility is now part of a broader risk mitigation strategy. Multiple residences, citizenships, investments, and business interests provide greater optionality in an unpredictable world.

That freedom of movement is influencing investment decisions too. Around 46% of UHNW investors in Asia-Pacific plan to increase their geographic diversification, alongside 31% in Europe and 30% in North America. As personal lives become increasingly cross-border, so does capital. Regional considerations therefore play a larger role, requiring advisors with institutional capabilities to support them.

Geopolitical Tensions

Third, UHNW investors are adapting to a more uncertain landscape.

Nearly two-thirds of UHNW respondents in a Bernstein survey identified geopolitical and economic instability as major concerns. UBS ranked geopolitical conflict as the leading short- and long-term investment risk, while Julius Baer found that between 82% and 95% of respondents were concerned or very concerned about geopolitical developments.

Naturally, defensive positioning through gold, liquidity, and broad diversification has become more prominent.

More importantly, we’re seeing a shift in investment philosophy. Wealth is increasingly defined by its ability to preserve optionality. In that sense, resilience is becoming just as valuable as growth.

The Institutional Portfolio

Fourth, individuals are increasingly building portfolios with an institutional mindset. Today, 94% of HNW investors allocate to private and alternative assets, with alternatives accounting for 34% of total net worth. Private company equity alone represents 21%, further blurring the distinction between traditional and alternative investments.

Several factors explain this trend. Companies are staying private longer, concentration risk in public markets has increased, and digital investment platforms have expanded access to private markets.

The result is that UHNW individuals are investing more like institutions that have long specialised in these asset classes.

Wealth Beyond the Portfolio

Each of these shifts changes how wealth is managed.

The rising cost of a premium lifestyle encourages more deliberate portfolio construction. As clients become more selective in their spending, advisors need to be equally selective in allocating capital.

Greater mobility across jurisdictions requires cross-border capability, including coordinated tax, legal, and regulatory planning that extends beyond a single home base.

Meanwhile, sustained geopolitical uncertainty is shifting the focus toward built-in defensive features—not only for capital preservation, but also for long-term continuity through estate planning, ownership, and succession. There is significant opportunity here: BDO’s Wealth Report 2026 found that only 30% of UHNWs have an active succession plan, despite more than £5 trillion expected to transfer to the next generation in the UK alone.

Lastly, the institutionalisation of portfolios raises the bar for advisors. Delivering institutional-quality solutions requires institutional-grade infrastructure that operates like a fund without adding operational complexity.

Taken together, investing is becoming a far more holistic endeavour for UHNW individuals. It’s no longer just about portfolios, but also about lifestyle, mobility, continuity, and long-term resilience.

The Need for a Structural Partner

This broader mandate asks more of the advisory relationship and highlights the importance of financial architecture: bespoke solutions engineered and issued by institutional-grade counterparties.

That’s the role a structural partner plays.

Invess doesn’t replace the advisor. We extend what can be offered by solving the engineering behind specific client needs without adding operational complexity. For advisors who have already earned the trust of their UHNW clients, that’s a lasting advantage.

UHNW investing priorities are evolving.
